Slim Pickings

Denim trends come and go like the wind, which is why its always good to hold on to them. The skinny jean has been around for a few seasons now and I’ve been asked many times whether they are still on trend this fall.

The answer is, absolutely! While other styles like the wide-leg and flare jean might be jumping in front of them as the hottest trend, they are still strong.

In fact, Women’s Wear Daily reported recently that skinny jeans have officially crossed over from a trend to a classic, and they are here to stay. Department stores were quoted as saying that they have become part of our everyday wardrobe.

You can be sure if major department stores consider the skinny to be a classic, you’ll find them in stores for a long time to come.

Dark Wash

Dark wash skinny’s are the most flattering in this family. The darker the wash, the more appropriate they are for work or evening gatherings. Pairing a heel with the dark style is also best for a sexy sleek look.

Charlize Theron looks chic and cool with her dark skinny jeans, black pumps and classic trench.

I also adore Zoe Saldana’s ladylike look far above where she paired hers with a preppy Chanel jacket (a great look for office Friday’s).

Pair these with heels and a pretty blouse and you’ve got a perfect look for a fun date.

Light Wash

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of light colored denim…really takes me back to a not-so-stylish time period in my life (you 30-40 something's know what I’m talking about).

But, paired with the right top, they can work. Cameron Diaz and Kristen Cavallari look California cool in their light wash skinny’s.

I think with these, you just have to be very careful not to look cheap, so choosing a pair that isn’t too tight and wearing with a less form fitting top are best bets.

Ankle

I love the ankle style in this jean because you can wear them with flats! Until these came along, I didn’t own a single pair of jeans that could be worn sans heels.

Kate Middleton looks amazing with a button down top and deck shoes with hers. The belt really adds to the casual cool.

Ballet flats are also perfect with these. That said, don’t be afraid to wear heels with them too - it’ll sass em up a bit.

Heels

Heels are great with skinny jeans, as long as they're not too chunky or too tall and thin. Avoid the super tall stilettos that are higher than 4-inches. With those rules in mind, almost any heel works.

If you’re going for a sexy look, try shiny or patent heels or a shoe with an open toe or interesting cut like Rosario Dawson.

If you want a casual, stylish look, go for a great bootie.

For a delicate, feminine flair, pair them with kitten heel sandals and an empire- waist or loose fitting top.

Boots and Flats

I love wearing my skinny jeans with heels, but I adore wearing them with my riding boots. When I wear these together, I feel instantly put together and ready to walk for miles. It’s a great fall look and an excellent way to show off a great boot.

As mentioned earlier, simple flats are perfect for this style. Try ballet flats with great details, metallic finishes, sequins, etc.

For a classic look, wear them with printed canvas ballet flats, paired with a cardigan.

Mid- High Waist

The mid-high waist versions of this jean work best for those with a little extra around the middle. If the rise is too low, it creates a muffin-top, so depending on how much extra weight you have in this area, a higher waist will help keep everything in.

Worn with a longer top that isn’t fitted and these allow you to enjoy this great trend too.

I like to think of myself as a “trend-adapter,” rather than a “trendsetter.” Having just recently accepted the skinny jean trend, I needed a little time to embrace it. But now that I have, I wear them more often than not. They are so comfy and fit with virtually any occasion - so I truly agree that they are a wardrobe staple. My J Brand skinny’s are the best because they have a great stretch fabric that feels almost pajama-like (no, I am NOT going to try the “as-seen-on-TV” Pajama Jeans). I also love my AG high-waisted Farrah’s that keep it all in on the days I need it.

This girl is a big fan of the skinny.

Trends – Colored Jeans

Denim Hue

Colored jeans are one of the biggest trends for fall, but picking out the right pair to complement your look takes some work. The style most associated with the trend is the skinny, but there are other options if these aren’t for you. Keep trying until you find your fit.

There is a rainbow of colored denim on the market, so which to choose?Remember that this is a fad piece of clothing and not likely one that you will wear for more than a season or two. It’s fun and now and that's exactly how you should treat it. Instead of splurging on several pairs, I’d recommend investing in ONE really good pair that you can wear to death while they are hot. Pick the best color for you and be sure to wear them in a variety of ways – dressing up and down.

Not surprising, red denim is seemingly the hottest hue – especially amongst the Hollywood set like Ashley Greene and Leann Rimes, shown here sporting sexy and casual looks. Below are two styles I found at Shopbop that I really like.

Former Rachel Zoe Project star, stylist Brad Goreski, partnered with J Brand to share styling tips for colored denim – I love the way he styled this red pair.

If red denim seems a little risqué for you, try easing into this trend with blue or green. These shades are the closest to standard denim and may give you the confidence you need to pull off this look.

Personally, I think the blue denim looks best paired with a sleek black jacket and heels, but I’ve also seen them paired with casual white tees and summer sandals for a chic day look.

I adore the softness of pink denim. Whether a pale shade as seen on Rachel Bilson above, or a darker color as shown at Anthropologie to the left, there is something very romantic and sweet about them.

I think both of these looks have an unexpected style that really works. It reminds me to think out of the box when I’m putting things together. If you have the style to rock colored denim, show us what you’ve got and get creative with how you wear it.

For some reason, I have always been drawn to the color green. So, I wasn’t surprised that I stopped and stared when I came across these sassy green jeans recently at Anthropologie. The perfect shade to be paired with a chic blouse…or perhaps a white top to cheer for the Michigan State Spartans (sorry….had to).

I was thrilled to get a few Anthro gift cards for my birthday this weekend and I just might make the splurge on these.

I love the color yellow and so wish it loved me back. While it isn’t meant for this pearly white skin, it sure sparkles on Jada Pinkett Smith. She looks sporty cool while catching a Lakers game.

I think the Elizabeth and James cargo style skinny’s are a great alternative to the brighter yellow shade above. These have a golden tone that offer a richness that may help extend their trend life.

If yellow is your color, you might lean in this direction if experimenting with color.

Oh Fergie, the trendsetter. Who else could get away with wearing two of the most daring trends in years - high-waisted and colored denim! I wouldn’t recommend trying this one at home, but I will say that the patent belt helped break up this look to make it doable.

So, are you sold on colored denim yet? If you’re thinking of giving it a try, J Brand offers a wide selection of colors and is the style you’ve seen most often on celebs. Rag & Bone also has a great silhouette and a variety of colors. I’ve found that the easiest place to shop for colored denim is through Shopbop, where you can search by “Colored Denim,” brand, price, etc. You can also “heart” your favorites so you can come back later after getting through them all. Following are a few final tips on wearing colored denim:

Adults that typically air on the conservative side may want to avoid bright denim and opt for colors that are deeper and darker. These shades are more likely to go with other things in your closet and may be more flattering on you.
Colored denim in the skinny style is a dramatic look. If you’re not sure you’re that daring, you may want to try a less extreme look with a boot or flared leg. This style balances out a woman's hips and behind because it doesn't come down into a tapered look.
Neutral colors complement colored jeans – Head to toe is too strong.

The Beloved Jean

Is there any greater fashion joy than finding the perfect pair of jeans? The right pair can make you feel taller, sexier and yes, even happier. I think every woman struggles with finding the right pair for her body or in determining if new trends will work for her. Research shows that the number of jeans most women own is ten and the number they actually wear is 3. Proof that we aren’t buying the RIGHT jeans. A little advance research and an awareness of your body type can save you lots of time and frustration in the fitting room.

I read somewhere once that jeans are like friends: Choose them wisely and they’ll cover your ass, make you look good, and last a lifetime.

My next several posts will focus on jeans – covering trends, where to shop, how to care for them and more. Today, let’s talk fit.

How do you find the perfect pair of jeans? How do you know what’s “right” for you? Well, you’ve got to start with knowing your body. Understand your problem areas (duh, who doesn’t?) and know what areas you want to emphasize. (sometimes having a booty isn’t a bad thing). Once you find a brand that works for you..be loyal to them. They will likely always be your friend.

Hippy/Curvy:

JOE’s Jeans (featured here) work great for the girl with a fuller bottom or curvier hips. They have a contoured waistband so they won’t gap in the back and they fit well in the hips, thighs and butt.

Also try DL1961, Henry & Belle, Lauren Ralph Lauren and Cj by Cookie Johnson, a line that was made for curves.

Pear shape:

Little in the Middle jeans are great for wide hips. The waist is one size smaller than the hips, so they’re good for curvy and pear shapes. Lucky Brand Jeans also makes a few styles that fit this figure type. They balance wide hips and a generous backside with boot-cut legs.

Styles to consider - A relaxed boot-cut is very flattering as is the 70’s cut for graceful proportions.
Remember, faded patterns distract the eye, while dark washes put the spotlight up top.

Boyish:

Most skinny cuts will work on the boyish figure (no curves), but I really like J Brand. They run extra-slim through the leg and have a soft comfortable feel. Another favorite is James Jeans. They may be the most flattering jeans I’ve ever owned and are always my go-to staple.

Other brands to try: Paige Denim and American Eagle Outfitters.

Petite:

Jeans are so long these days that I often think about the petite gals and their struggles to not only find a pair that works…but then to find a good seamstress to tailor them. Ugh.

Several designers have come to the rescue by making versions of their best sellers with shorter inseams. James Jeans “Twiggy” skinnies come in a 29” inseam and AG Adriano Goldschmied also makes great petites. Retailers like the Gap and Ann Taylor also cover the shorter gals.

Tall:

I’m an average tall girl, with long legs…so I’m often searching for the perfect length. One of my favorite jeans in the world is Hudson for that reason. They are GREAT for the tall girl AND they have a great backside (see right). For the super tall lady, Hudson’s Signature Supermodel jean has an extra-long 36” inseam. J Brand also has a longer inseam style. Retailers like Express and the Gap make a 34” inseam too. Note: Tall girls should not wear capris! Long legs are the center of attention in structured, trouser-style blues.

Plus-size:

As with petites, many designers have embraced “special” sizes and have finally started offering styles for the normal sized girl.

DKNY Jeans are on-trend and come in a wide range of sizes. Old Navy also has a special plus size section. Plus size gals should look for clean lines and a straight fit through the leg. A darker rinse is very flattering.

Levi’s Curve ID:

The jean experts at Levi came up with a genius idea to getting the perfect fit. They introduced Curve ID, designed according to shape, not size.

Have hips or a butt? Get an instant lift with the Demi Curve. If you’re straight-figured, the Slight Curve creates a feminine silhouette. Bold Curve hugs without gaping for the girl with wider hips and a smaller waist.

So, what if you’re not sure what your “body type” is? Here are a few tips to remember when you’re in the fitting room:

Waist: Check that the waistband sits comfortably and that your stomach doesn't spill over. Then bend and reach for your toes. If you're showing too much skin in the back, look for a higher waistband.
Rise – A mid rise works for most figures, lower works on short torsos, and higher is great on long legs.
Butt – Try on a pair that feels like it fits, then walk, sit down, stand back up, and take a second look. There shouldn't be any bunching or sagging. If there is, this jean will look terrible after a few hours of wear.
Inseam – Jeans you plan to wear with flats should break anywhere between just below the ankle and right above the ground. Jeans you wear with heels should be long enough to cover the back of shoes.

What’s in a pocket? The way a jean pocket falls on your behind may be THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you look for in a jean. Let’s face it, a friend once told me that when a guy say’s “Nice Jeans,” he doesn't mean he likes your jeans. Nothing accentuates the bottom on a jean like the pockets. Most brands have a signature pocket, like Hudson, 7 for All Mankind and True Religion. Find the one that makes your rear view shine and you’ve got your forever jean. For me….it’s Hudson and James Jeans. They have never failed me and I will never fail them. Here are a few pocket tips:

Flap pockets: The extra fabric adds volume, which amps up small backsides
High pockets: Placed closer to the yoke, they draw the eye up
Far apart: Wide-set pockets create curves by giving the illusion of fuller hips.
Low pockets: Pockets that sit low draw the eye down, which can make your butt look bigger.
No pockets: A blank back highlights imperfections and leads to a wider-looking behind. Avoid at all costs.

Look for more information on jeans in my next few posts. Ultimately, the best way to look great in your blues is to feel confident. A good fit will help create that confidence, so don't be afraid to spend time finding the right style for you. Jeans are worth the time.

The Skirt

Leading Fashion Trends for Centuries…

Like all true girly girls do, I have a genuine love of dresses. I wear them nearly everyday and I’m constantly on the hunt for more. Lately though, I’ve been on a skirt kick. Almost as easy to wear as the dress and certainly just as feminine, the skirt is a great wardrobe staple. This is just a quick post to highlight some of the skirts that have caught my eye – with this amazing styling, who could help but be inspired?

The featured skirt above is a colorblocked sweater skirt by Girls from Savoy from Anthropologie. The A-Line shape is easy to wear and the color combination is really eye-catching. This skirt comes in grey too.

I’m in love with this textured pink pencil skirt by Moulinette Soeurs from Anthropologie.

The styling in this photo demonstrates its amazing versatility. Who would think to pair a structured pink skirt with a casual green gingham shirt? It’s a great staple piece that can be worn conservatively for the office or for a fun lunch with the girls.

I just tried this Eva Franco skirt on and it’s really flattering! The wide band cinches at the waist, keeping the tummy in place and the structured pleats add dimension to the pretty pattern design.

Inspired by a fabulous jacket style, the Trenchcoat skirt by Cartonnier can be sporty or professional as Anthro demonstrated well. I adore both of these looks. The sash is removable for yet another take.

Another charmer by Eva Franco at Anthropologie. This bold pattern compliments the pencil frame magnificently. I love the gathered detail at the waist, accented with the simple belt. Superb.

Rebecca Taylor is one of my all-time favorite designers. Her subtle feminine style has so much charm and sensibility.

This multi-grey shaded flannel skirt has a fun patchwork design that is accented by a contrasting blue trim. The A-Line shape also features a saucy 7'” back slit.

Now after all of this skirt talk…I think I’ll do a little shopping. MAYBE one of these??

The Royal Visit – A Fashion Recap

O Canada

Who could help but be captivated by Princess Catherine’s regal beauty? During the royal couple’s recent whirlwind tour of North America, the Duchess of Cambridge did not disappoint. All eyes were on every last detail of her wardrobe and she handled it with incredible grace, fitting of a Princess. Certainly, she is a stunning beauty made better by her seemingly charming, and sweet personality. What strikes me most about her style is that she always wears simple, elegant pieces that are modern and age appropriate and the way she carries herself makes it all look effortless. Following are my top 10 favorites from her visit to Canada and the United States:

#1 – Reiss (above). Although we’ve seen the Reiss Nanette dress before when Kate wore it for the official engagement portraits, it seemed completely new at this event. This time, Kate honored the Canadian flag by accenting the delicate white dress with a pretty red maple leaf fascinator, red pumps and a diamond maple-leaf brooch lent to her by the queen. The hat was designed by Sylvia Fletcher at Lock and Co.

#2 – Diane von Furstenberg

It’s no secret that Diane von Furstenberg is my favorite designer. I proudly have several of her dresses hanging in my closet, including one from this collection and in this pretty shade of green.

Kate wore the chic “Maja” silk dress for a reception held at British Consul-General Barbara Hay's L.A. residence. She paired the dress with a leopard purse also from DVF.

#3 - Issa

One of Kate’s favorites is Issa, a designer she wears often. I must say this is my favorite of her Issa dresses. I love the brilliant purple color, the deep v-neck and the subtle, yet charming gathering at the waist. This dress was worn at a Canada Day concert, held to commemorate the nation's 144th birthday.

Nice touch adding the Queen’s maple leaf brooch again, Kate. Note: The Queen wore this brooch on her first trip to Canada in 1951. Isn’t that wonderful?

#4 – Erdem Moralioglu

Before this tour, I had not been aware of designer Erdem Moralioglu, but I sure am now. Kate wore two intricate dresses from the designer and I fell in love with them.

This striking dress in a navy blue lace features sheer sleeves, scallop detail and a shift scoop-back. It is from the designers spring 2011 collection.

She paired the dress with her favorite nude L.K. Bennett shoes, that she wore throughout the trip. Clearly she is a reasonable packer too!

#5 – Malene Birger

For her visit to Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, Kate debuted a new designer – Malene Birger.

The cream linen three-quarter sleeve “Bullet” dress was worn with her favorite L.K. Bennett Sledge2 pumps, a clutch and Kiki McDonough Citrine drop earrings.

Malene Birger is also a new designer for me, but I was impressed so did a little digging. An award-winning Danish designer (I’m Danish too!), the line is inspired from the classic styles of the 50’s and 60’s and is elegant, feminine and easy to wear.

#6 – Roland Mouret/Smythe

I love that Kate can make a very business-like outfit look so modern and chic. Proof that office attire doesn’t need to be boring. Here she’s ready to board the plane headed for Canada, wearing a dark navy Roland Mouret "Manon" dress and a Smythe one button jacket. She carried a Mulberry Polly Push Lock bag in Midnight.

#7 – Alexander McQueen

Kate attended her first Hollywood red carpet event with the BAFTA gala and wore a floor length pleated lilac chiffon gown by Alexander McQueen.

Her accessories were equally as charming – she wore earrings lent to her by Queen Elizabeth, and Jimmy Choo clutch and sandals.

#8 – Smythe/J Brand

Kate has perfected casual chic with this outfit. On a visit to Slave Lake, Alberta, she paired her structured Smythe jacket (remember she wore it above with the Roland Mouret dress) with a romantic ruffled blouse and her J Brand “811” skinny jeans. Adding the wide brown belt and L.K. Bennett wedges were the final touches that made this outfit perfection.

#9 – Alice Temperley

I couldn’t help but include this outfit in the mix of favorites because she looks so darn cute in her ten-gallon hat!

To help kick off the Calgary Stampede parade, Kate chose another romantic top to pair with her cowboy hat and boots and a big belt buckle. The pretty white lace blouse was designed by top Brit designer Alice Temperley.

#10 – Jenny Packham

Finally, I just loved the delicate hand-painted floral design on this Jenny Packham dress.

The “De Gournay” chinoiserie silk dress was worn to the Foundation Polo Challenge held at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, benefitting the royals' charity.

It was a fun couple of weeks peering in on the daily activities of the Royals during their visit and waiting to see what the Princess would wear next. I heard often that she didn’t travel with a stylist (although I’m sure she had a little help from a stylist before she left)and that she packed over 40 dresses to choose from. She clearly has an amazing sense of style and impressive attention to detail. She also loves a good wardrobe repeat, which I think makes everyone love her. During this trip she wore her J Brand jeans 3 times, her Smythe jacket twice, the Queens brooch twice and her L.K. Bennett nude pumps at least 5 times.

What do I think is her best fashion statement – the beautiful smile she ALWAYS has on her face. Nothing makes a girl more stylish than that.

Swimsuit Style

One Piece or Two?

It’s usually around the 4th of July that I start thinking about spending time in the sun and enjoying a swim. And then, inevitably, I’m disappointed with my swimsuit selection and start the search…you know, when they are all picked over at the stores. I will say, I was thrilled to find a cute navy & white striped one-piece (I think my bikini days are over) at Target the other day, adorned with an cute red rose in the top center. Adorable and perfect to show my Independence Day spirit.

I found a few other patriotic selections that I had to share. The triangle bikini from Thayer above can be found exclusively at Shopbop.

The bandeau top to the left is from Lucky Brand at Everything But Water. The top ties at the back.

Everything But Water is a great place to find swimwear. You can choose from a series of collections each season and mix and match styles/pieces to expand your choices.

I love this white convertible style bandeau top with halter tie from Carmen Marc Valvo. Sexy and functional.

Another cute halter style from Everything But Water, I love this delicate print from Lucky Brand. The sweet factory collection includes this cute skirted bottom for a little more coverage.

I also was impressed with the Salt Swimwear collection.

The Lola style features multi-string detail at the top and sides creating a cool negative space effect. Another surprising touch – the strings drape down the back!

This suit was featured in Surfing Magazine Swim 2011.

Diane von Furstenberg has created a number of stunning swimsuits this season, including this reversible print bikini. The other side is a peach color trimmed with this pattern (inset). When investing in a swimsuit, its nice to get 2-in-1 to make it an even better investment. This great suit can be found at Shopbop.

How cute is this bikini from Swim Systems? I found this at Everything But Water and really fell for the adorable details. The black & white graphic pattern is interesting, but not over done and the red trim adds a perfect touch. I love the top trim with a little tuxedo effect. Such a flattering piece.

I adore the retro feel of the metro bikini from Pret-a-Surf. It features a halter top with seam details at underwire cups. The halter straps tie behind the neck. Best part – the bottom features ruched overlay at the front and contrast tie at exposed back zip.

Pret-a-Surf is a high-end line of swimwear, rash guards, and board shorts for the fashionable woman who wants to maintain her style while she plays with the boys.

Swimspot is a fantastic site to find unique high-end suits. I love the Opening-Day peekaboo tankini. This suit has an uptown feel with charming detail and sexy silhouette. It’s a wearable piece, well suited for a cocktail party or a dip in the pool.

The berry colored boot camp collection by Next at Swimspot was such a fave of mine that I had to feature three of the pieces to show it’s versatility. The racer back tankini at top is my favorite. I also love the halter style top and bike shorts. This style is perfect for the active girl that wants to jog or play volleyball at the beach…or take a swim. The last suit is a two piece that provides the coverage of a one. Great looking suit.

This suit would be flattering on any body type. From Tommy Bahama, it can be found at Everything But Water. The ruched design adds style, helps conceal any imperfections and provides great tummy control.

This pretty pink suit from Lauren also provides great tummy control, while offering a delicate design with ruffle detail. Great feminine design.

The Heavenly one-piece suit from O’Neill has a great striped design and vibrant blue color. It ties at the back of the neck and it features tie detail at the hips.

Last but not least is this ultra sexy suit from Luxe by Lisa at Swimspot. The Socialite Maillot one piece is refined, elegant and sexy. The posh black suit has intricate floret detailing and underwire for added support and a low v-back. It’s a classic, timeless style.

I’ve got the Blues

Blue Blooded

This week, a dream of mine came true. I accepted a position with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as Director, Executive Communications and Press Secretary to CEO Daniel J. Loepp. I’ve had the pleasure of working with BCBSM as a vendor partner for six years and couldn’t be happier to be starting this new chapter as an official member of the Blues family.

In honor of my exciting news and my new company, I am dedicating this post to the color blue - my favorite color.

I adore this strapless “Obelisk” dress. The pattern is fun and flirty and the A-line skirt falling just above the knee is flattered further by the inverted front pleat and side pockets. It’s the perfect summer dress, with a structure that makes it a great transition piece for the office too. The best part – the unexpected bamboo buckle at the waist.

I first discovered Milly (designed by Michelle Smith) while working for Jacobson’s Stores in 2001. We were one of the first stores to buy her line when she was starting out. I had the pleasure of managing press for her debut at our stores and a personal appearance in Florida. I’ve always been drawn to her youthful take on classic silhouettes and the feminine touches that make her pieces stand out.

Another charmer from Milly is this apron style “Betriz” day dress. It’s so easy to wear with it’s simplicity, yet wonderful attention to detail. The dress features a unique double breasted button detail and ties to flatter the waist.

This piece is sophisticated and charming and perfect for a summer barbeque or night out with the girls.

Anthropologie never disappoints by offering pretty, whimsical dresses for any occasion. I am so enamored with this brilliant blue cotton dress, swimming with colorful butterflies. I think I must have this just to see the sweet smile it will put on my niece Lilly’s face.

What makes this dress special is it’s pencil shape and black sash at the waist - the features make the dress really versatile.

This is my favorite shade of blue and mixed with this pretty floral pattern it is so eye-catching.

Found at Anthropologie, the “Vokko Dress” boasts an oversized Finnish anemones design. The strapless silhouette has a unique slouch-pocketed, breezy style with a keyhole closure in the back.

So cute.

Over at Anthropologie’s BHLDN there is no end to pretty, unique dresses.

How great is this little navy tuxedo bib style dress? I love it’s endless ruffles which add romantic interest and would flatter any figure. The racerback style is perfect for the girl that wants to highlight great shoulders and arms.

As a wedding party dress, this playful piece is perfect for the young bride who wants to have a little more fun with her maids.

I’m usually not a fan of the maxi dress, but this one looks so fresh and comfortable.

The “Elizabete Hostess Dress” is perfect in navy blue and accented with a thin brown belt. I like the rounded neckline and fitted band waist. The back also has interesting detail with a large keyhole opening.

This is another timeless piece that would be a staple for any women’s closet.

I’m totally wowed by this feminine take on the shirt dress by Derek Lam. With it’s flirty bow and neckline detail, this silk navy dress is both girly and modern. It’s so hard to find cute dresses with sleeves these days too – this one is just the right length to allow the full sleeve to flatter.

Great dress.

Ruche is one of my favorite places to find cute, inexpensive pieces. I was thrilled to find this adorable mod blue dress with vertical cream stripes. The lace trimmed sweetheart neckline adds interest at the top and the two laced trimmed pockets bring great detail below the waist. It’s A-line skirt and matching blue belt complete the look.

Jumping away from my love of dresses…who can resist the pretty pattern mixing in this top?

The “Blue Pansy Sweater” by Markus Lupfer is made of merino wool, has a crew neck and features a beautiful blue floral pattern in the body, along the length of the sleeve and cuffs and is trimmed with cool striped panels along the outside of the sleeves.

The attention to detail makes this garment so interesting to look at and is also finely constructed. Worth the investment.

Last but not least, I admit to being obsessed with this jacket. In fact, I can’t be sure I haven’t talked about it in a post before – but if so, it deserves another nod.

Smythe is known for their exquisitely tailored jackets and I have admired them for years. I tried this one on during a recent trip to New York and fell in love. As I said, this is my favorite shade of blue so it has that going for it…but it also has such great shape. It’s the coolest feminine take on equestrian chic – the sleeves feature perforated tan patches on the elbows. I love the way Saks styled the jacket here with a great J Brand skinny jean and tan booty. I really must figure out how to make this jacket mine – I’ve already got the jeans!

Royal Wedding Style Review

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

At long last, the Royal Wedding arrived on April 29 and the world watched as Kate Middleton married her Prince and became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. I was so excited to watch this real-life fairytale come to life with my two favorite girls – my twin sister Wendie and her 5-year-old daughter Lilly. The day before the wedding, Lilly called me and asked if I would come over and watch the wedding with her, assuring me that she would be getting up REALLY early to watch. ;o) Lilly and I wore tiaras and Wendie wore a fancy hat for the festivities. We had such a special time together and created a memory that we will never forget.

I was so excited when Kate first stepped out of the vintage car to reveal her breathtaking Alexander McQueen dress, designed by Sarah Burton. Sarah put together the dress by hand. The bodice is made of ivory satin and narrows at the waist. Individual flowers were hand cut from lace and hand-engineered onto the ivory silk tulle dress to create the design, which features rose, thistle, daffodil, and shamrocks on it, a nod to national flowers of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Kate’s Cartier ‘Halo’ tiara was made in 1936 and it was lent to her by Queen Elizabeth II.

The veil is made of layers of ivory silk tulle. It is trimmed with hand-embroidered flowers, sewn on by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace.

It was reported that Kate wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity and I think she got her wish. The shape and feminine detail on this gown were absolutely made for her classic beauty and style.

Kate's sister, Philippa “Pippa” Middleton, carried her train and escorted the young bridesmaids throughout the ceremony.

Pippa (the spitting image of her big sister) wore an ivory satin gown, also designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

The dress incorporated the same lace trim and button detail as the bridal gown.

Prince William wore an official British Army uniform for his nuptials and looked dashing. Harry (I admit I’m a little sweet on him) looked handsome in his uniform too. I loved watching their brotherly banter during the ceremony.

I couldn’t resist sharing this adorable picture of little bridesmaid, Grace van Cutsem’s (Prince William’s goddaughter) sour face as the couple shared their first kiss. While the world was cheering, this one was not quite as thrilled. I’m sure she was reacting to the thunderous crowd, but its pretty darn funny. (*Thanks to Emily Moran for showing me this one)

Royal Wedding guests also gave us lots of wows!

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece is a regal beauty that is always on the best-dressed list. I thought she looked amazing in this pale blue Philip Treacy hat adorned with beautiful flowers.

I was disappointed that I couldn’t find a full photo of her dress because it was so pretty.

Spain’s Princess Letizia looked lovely in her pale pink, embellished dress with seven-eighth sleeves paired with gloves and a matching cloche-like hat with flowers and a veil.

This look received a lot of mixed reviews, but I loved it and think her makeup was well suited as well.

Always a beacon of style, Victoria Beckham didn’t disappoint wearing a dress of her own design. The classic silhouette was flattering on her cute baby bump.

The classic mini pillbox hat by Philip Treacy was the perfect topper with her sleek ponytail. I loved its whimsical detail which added a little flair to the otherwise serious look.

I will say that the 7-inch Louboutins were a little much though. These days heel heights are getting just a touch too high. Sure, they look fierce for photos, but when a gal can’t walk swiftly in her shoes, it loses the appeal.

Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Phillips, looked a little futuristic in her gunmetal grey dress by Paul Costelloe and circular black topper by Philip Treacy.

As the next royal to get married, I imagine we will see an edgier, more modern look with her wedding gown.

Prince Edwards wife – Sophie, Countess of Wessex demonstrated her classic beauty in this fantastic Jane Taylor rosette spray hat, complementing her pretty blonde hair.

She paired the hat with a beige Bruce Oldfield dress and coat that was accented with beautiful embroidery.

Lady Frederick Windsor – a.k.a. Sophie Winkleman - looked smashing in a navy Armani Prive, diamond-patterned suit on the arm of her husband, Lord Freddie Windsor (son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent).

Philip Treacy shines again on Lady Windsor with this sculpted straw hat featuring festive twirls at the top.

Bring on the color! While most Royal Wedding guests chose to don subtle hues, a few stylish ladies stood out in the crowd with vibrant color.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden was one of them in this gorgeous coral Elie Saab.

Her husband, Prince Daniel, always looks dapper with his “Clark Kent” style specs too.

Oh how I love Joss Stone! The British singer, who performed at Princess Diana's memorial concert in 2007, makes a bright and bold statement outside Westminster Abbey.

Her fresh, head-to-toe pink from High Street store Hobbs was delightful and the peep-toe shoes and straw cream hat with subtle pink flowers framed her face perfectly.

This picture doesn’t show it, but she also had free-spirited hair styled with a few tousled locks falling from the hat. She looks young and fresh, while still being appropriately elegant for her age.

Miriam Clegg, wife of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, was stunning in a black netted suit by Miguel Palacio.

The Spanish beauty added colorful drama to her suit with a Carmen Miranda red rose head wrap. Her swept-back raven hair was the perfect contrast for the splash of color.

Absolutely one of my favorites.

Here we have a colorful hit and a colorful miss with sisters Santa Montefiore and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. No doubt they turned a few heads with their vibrant and dramatic entrance at Westminster Abbey, although likely because folks needed a second to take it all in.

Montefiore (left) looked chic in a purple sheath dress and fur stole with a multi-color Stephen Jones fascinator. Her sister on the other hand, was a little bit TOO head-to-toe blue in her Deborah Milner dress and Philip Treacy hat. The dress was amazing on her, but the matching blue hat, shoes, gloves and clutch made her look like she was performing for the Blue Man Group. Sans the gloves, it would have been perfect.

How cute are the Spencer sisters – Ladies Amelia, Eliza and Kitty? They are William and Harry's first cousins and daughters of Charles, Earl of Spencer. They all are wearing cute hats and Kitty looked great in a sexy Victoria Beckham dress.

William and Harry’s other cousins didn't fare quite as well…oh dear girls, what were you thinking? Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice of York looked matronly in their dresses and the hats didn’t help.

Eugenie wore a peacock-hued Vivienne Westwood that had a cute poufy skirt, but an unflattering busy top.

Beatrice chose a blush Valentino Couture coat that while too old for her, would have been ok with a less outrageous hat. Philip Treacy didn’t win on this one. Yikes!

Harry’s 7-year on-again/off-again girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, was disappointing in this teal green Alberta Ferretti. The jacket was ill-fitting and the skirt was too tight, bunching up as she walked.

However, I did like the sweet Victoria Grant fascinator and her swept back hair.

Kate looked equally as stunning when she appeared in her second dress of the day and ready to have fun at the reception. The dress, also a McQueen/Burton creation, was a white satin strapless evening gown with a circle skirt and diamante detailing around the waist. She finished the look with a simple white fuzzy shrug. Once again, she looked regal and elegant.

Pippa looked amazing in her reception dress too – a sexy/chic emerald-green custom made dress by Temperley London.

Alice Temperley was quoted as feeling honored to have been asked to design a dress for Pippa and that she was a delight to work with as she knows just what she likes.

The dress was designed especially for her with a fantastic open back and a full skirt for dancing in.

What a beautiful wedding day the young Royals had. An experience we all will remember. They are a joy to watch – and I hope they will now get the chance to settle into a little less attention. I love the shot below of Kate and William departing the Palace for a private weekend. She is wearing a simple blue dress, sharp jacket and wedge platforms. He is cheery in his chinos, sportcoat and brown loafers. Enjoy married life, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Thanks for letting the world share.

A New Chapter Begins

When I sat down this morning to write my next post, it was taking me far too long to decide which fabulous spring trend to highlight this week. Finally, I realized it was because my heart wasn’t in it today.

This morning, I helped my very dear friend Sara pack up the last bit of belongings in her car and gave her the biggest hug ever as she began her trek home to Wisconsin. I’m filled with happiness for her new beginning, but I admit that I will miss her terribly.

In honor of Sara, I couldn’t think of a better topic to write about then friendship. There are few relationships in life as rewarding as true, loving friendships. Family, of course, is our core and we all are blessed to be given those blood ties with dads, moms, sisters, brothers and cousins. But best friends are those that come into our lives and enrich us so greatly as human beings that we choose to make them a part of our family. Our core.

Sara is one of those friends for me. She came into my life a little over six years ago when she met and married my husband’s best friend, Ben. We found ourselves spending a lot of time together over the years with trips to the great North - hunting, fishing (ok…I may have stayed inside scrapbooking for that stuff), vacations, holidays and ringing in every New Year together.

She really has become like a sister to me.

I also admire and respect her more than words can say. Life sometimes forces change upon us that we don’t wish, expect or want, and that really understates what she has been through this last year. She is stronger, wiser and more inspiring than she can possibly know.

When we said our tearful goodbye this morning, it wasn’t because we were really saying goodbye. It was because of the cherished friendship we have been so lucky to have and an expression of our gratefulness for it. I’m thankful that only distance will separate that bond.

Spring into Color

There is a reason brights find themselves on the top spring trends list nearly every year. After months of treading through the winter doldrums, we’re ready to break out and wear COLOR! This season is no exception and brights are considered the top must-have.

That said, as much as people love seeing brights when spring rolls in, they often are afraid of actually wearing them. The key to pulling off brights is knowing your colors and selecting the right shade for your skin tone. Lean toward colors that typically look best on you and try them on in natural light to be sure the bright version compliments you in the same way.

Pink

I have very pale skin with pink undertones, so vibrant pinks tend to work best on me (while the pale versions wash me out).

If you’re mixing bright shades, pinks and corals look great with oranges and reds.

Rachel Bilson turned heads last fall in this delicate pink Christian Dior frock. With its ladylike, feminine design and perfect vibrant shade, what girl wouldn’t dream of wearing this dress?

Following are a few dreamy pink and coral dresses I fell for while researching this post:

Orange

Perhaps the most vibrant of the bright shades, orange is a fantastic color – but also not an easy one to wear. Fear not though, you just need to know your shade. From tangerine to vivid melon tones, this color will really warm up your wardrobe.

I’d recommend going tonal with orange and mixing it with neutral accessories like Gwyneth Paltrow did with this sleek Calvin Klein sheath - a great fresh, clean look.

But, if you’ve got the coloring and confidence of Camilla Belle – the color looks pretty fabulous mixed with several brights all at once (see her in Gucci above).

Loving these pretties too:

Yellow

Who doesn’t love yellow? The color emotes sunshine and happiness and epitomizes the season.

BUT, it’s also a tough one to wear for certain skin tones….like mine.

Over the years, I’ve discovered a way to wear it though – by simply keeping it away from my face. I just bought the little dress from Anthropologie below, which has a delightful yellow patterned skirt with a bright white top. Perfect solution. I’ll also wear bold yellow accessories like belts or handbags so I can still get the happy feel of the color.

You golden haired, olive skinned gals are so lucky to be free with this color!

Green

I’ve always been drawn to any shade of green. Emerald, hunter, kelly – you name it, this color is flattering on almost everyone.

Heidi Klum looks amazing in this form fitting, classic dress by Victoria Beckham.

Following are a few other eye-catching green dresses and an example of fantastic color mixing. I love bright green and blue together for a fun pop.

Don’t forget green accessories if you don’t want to go all out. Mixing a great green handbag or shoe with a neutral beige dress is unexpected cool.

Blue

No matter the shade, blue is my favorite color and makes up the breadth of my wardrobe.

Blue is a really easy color to wear for most people, so if you’re on the fence about going bright this season, blue is a great place to start. Choose a bold, vibrant cobalt to be on the safe side and a cool turquoise or aqua if you want to be a little more daring.

Either way, vibrant blue is as unexpected as it is eye catching.

Demi Moore is stunning in this cobalt Vivienne Westwood gown....no need for competing accessories here.

I’m also loving these blue pieces for the season:

Purple

Purple is a new color for me and I’m not sure why I’ve not tried it before. It’s pretty close to the blue family, so its a good fit for me and it has a very feminine tone to it that I really like. Sordof a hybrid of pink and blue, I think.

I love how young, fresh and sexy Selena Gomez looks in this purple mini by Reem Acra. The neutral shoe really elongates the legs and allows the dress to stand out.

When wearing purple – or any bright shade really – you know you will command attention. So wear it with confidence and be ready to own the room. Don’t be afraid to mix brights with other brights for extra intensity and interest (like the Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti dress below).

If you’re looking to add color and brights to your wardrobe this season, I recommend starting with sites like Shop Bop and ASOS. Not only do they have a tremendous selection, but their navigation tools allow you to easily search by color. This makes the process less overwhelming, while also allowing you to narrow your search to the colors that best suit you.

Transcend the Ordinary

This is my buddy, Max. I’m not sure if Robert Graham knows it, but this guy is your biggest fan. I’ve never seen a fella (ok, especially not a straight one) so devoted to a brand, the color pink and pattern mixing. Granted, Max’s mom is a long-time employee of Neiman Marcus and has done a wonderful job exposing him to the finer things in life – but his love of these shirts is endlessly amusing to me. It’s charming really.

As a matter of fact, it is the inspiration for my post today. Max is my colleague at Lambert, Edwards & Associates…until the end of today that is. This young lad is moving on to advance his career. I’m happy for him, but admit that I’ll miss seeing his smiling face, jovial laugh….and those Robert Graham shirts. This one’s for you, Max!

The Robert Graham brand was founded in 2001 by Robert Stock and Graham Fowler. Stock, an award-winning American fashion designer and Fowler, an English textile designer, combined their two surnames to start the luxury label (Fowler left the company in 2002).

Spring Must-Have: The Trench

The Art of the Trench

The warm and sunny weather here in Detroit over the last few days has me ready to shed my winter coat and debut the jackets! Nothing says spring like a great trench coat (ok, and maybe baseball). It’s a top pick for the season – just ask Tory Burch who answered “ a great trench” when asked on The View last Friday for her thoughts on the must-haves for spring.

Though it began as a military uniform, the trench coat has become a cornerstone of the 21st century wardrobe. It perfectly balances style and function with its chic-yet-classic construction. Burberry has long been known for their trenches – they’ve even celebrated the iconic coat by creating a social networking site, The Art of the Trench, to document people wearing them around the world.

Royal fiancé, Kate Middleton, started a fury earlier this month when she wore a gorgeous Burberry trench on a surprise visit to Northern Ireland. The chic double-breasted trench sported military details and a flared ruffled hem and within a day was sold out on the company’s web site. This trench is my top pick with its classic, romantic styling – I must have it.

A great classic investment piece, Smythe, gives us their impeccable tailoring with a modern take on the trench. I really don’t think the photo does this one justice. The details abound with the flattering double pockets, beautiful waistline and exaggerated lapel.

Once you experience a Smythe tailored jacket, you become addicted for life.

Tory Burch has created quite a lifestyle brand and serious devoted clientele.

I love her sophisticated “Luther” version in ivory. It looks so elegant with a pretty dress and would be incredibly chic with a great pair of jeans or a sleek pair of ivory trousers.

Amazing attention to detail here.

Hipsters, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, have really impressed me with their Elizabeth and James collection. The ladies have been trendsetters for years and have done well with many branding efforts in fashion, but its this line that has really peaked my interest.

I love the hip, yet vintage styling in their belted twill trench. The A-Line coat has leather trim detailing on a shoulder flap and center back belt and belted cuffs.

Really great piece.

Elie Tahari’s “Sylvana” trench stands out to me because of its three button closure and bright white shade. It’s one of those jackets that you see on a woman passing by and find yourself thinking about it hours later wondering where to find it.

Other details include a tonal grosgrain ribbon adorning the flap pockets and belted cuffs. A buckled tie cinches the waist and the back sports a stormflap and large inverted pleat.

Always a favorite designer of mine, Milly’s Piped Stretch Twill Trench is about as cute as they come.

Each spring, I find myself captivated by navy and white so this trench really caught my eye. The navy piping is a great contrast to the white twill and great interest, particularly on the belt.

This jacket is immensely flattering and chic.

What I love most about trenches is that they are classic and can be interpreted in so many different ways, making them a staple for any age and any style.

Sites like Top Shop and ASOS are great for finding unique styling at affordable prices. The 70’s belted trench from ASOS comes in other shades and is only $125! The tan color shown here really pops with the slightly darker belt and the deep covered pockets are fabulous.

Top Shop’s Tall Stone Storm Flap Trench has great detail and perfect flirty length.

The right trench can be worn with anything and is a great investment piece for any budget. It’s smart to own one in a classic cut and color, but also add to your collection with a bright colored version or different texture.

Another sassy take on the trench is the Corset Lace Back Trench at ASOS. I adore the fun, youthful styling shown with this coat which really helps convey its attitude.

The single breasted jacket features dual pleats at the front and a full skirt. The back features a laced panel woven through eyelets to gather in a bustle.

At under $60, this one is truly a steal.

Now that I have at least four trenches on my wish list, I better narrow it down a bit. In a dream world, I’ll have Kate’s trench and maybe a kicky fun version from ASOS. I’ll report back when I make the big decision.

Romantic Jewelry at BHLDN

Charmed

In my final review of BHLDN, Anthropologies new bridal destination, I will share thoughts on just a few of the many unique and romantic pieces that make perfect finishing touches to wedding day garments – whether for the bride or her lovely maids.

The charming Frozen Rock necklace by Dana Kellin (above) is one of my favorites. I see this as a timeless treasure that would become a signature piece in a woman’s collection - worn on both special and everyday occasions (and always carrying memories of her wedding day).

Also love these whimsy little charmers – “Cascading Earrings” from Lee Angel. Great for the girl that wants to add a little fun to her classic look.

I couldn't agree more with the description of the “Tussled Necklace” by Lee Angel on the site: “ We think the put-together look is a bit, well, stuffy. Throw on these tangled strands over your dress for a bit of glamorous dishevelment.”

In true Anthropologie style, this is an unconventional classic and will add interest and volume to any bridal gown.

BHLDN is chalk full of pretty earrings. What I love about these hand-set crystal hoops is their simplicity of imperfection. They are “hand-hammered” giving them a little bit of a crooked appearance. The Crystal Fob Drops are the perfect dainty size and are ideal for special occasion dressing.

And how about the retro-glam styling of the “Bygone Earrings” by Lee Angel? I love the understated drama that they radiate. These should be worn with pulled back hair so you don’t miss a second of them. The Galore Earrings have a vibrant Indian inspiration with beautiful turquoise beading mixed with crystal and glass beads. I think they would be a great color compliment to a bridal gown, but also perfect for bridesmaids.

Love the super-cute “Oui” ring with little floral accent. Just one of those little things that commemorate the special day. Bracelets are often a forgotten touch, but I adore this silk based, neutral toned crystal piece of loveliness from GB Couture by Emily & Ashley. The sheer chiffon tie makes it adjustable for all wrist sizes.

I am definitely a brooch lover and I simply can’t take my eyes off of this one. The “Twinkling Agate Brooch” by Anton Huenis is composed of natural elements so the color and shape of the stones will vary slightly. That said, the design is such a statement piece and adds the perfect amount of fancy to special occasion or any feminine classic dressing.

BHLDN sure has a fan in me - I hope you all like it too. Brides-to-be are lucky to have this amazing new resource of choices to create their perfect wedding day look.

Ooh La La!

After a brief break to cover the Oscars, I must get back to shining a light on Anthropologie’s new bridal collection, BHLDN. I mean, what's a wedding without pretty undergarments to complete the look? BHLDN has pulled together an eclectic collection of delicate, feminine lingerie that would make any woman feel beautiful….and probably delight a new husband.

The Vanity Table Peignoir by Fleur Wood has an old Hollywood glamour feel and is made of lacy georgette fabric. The perfect wedding night gown.

Another favorite – the Chantilly Bra and Knickers are standouts. I love the lace-edge features and the ruched bikini.

The Tracings set from the Simone Perele Avant Premiere collection is so lovely and delicate….and yes, sexy as heck. The lacy boy short is a great look.

Only Hearts always designs the most ladylike, feminine bras and panties. How adorable is this? The “Knotted Gamine” metallic lace bra and panty features soft blue mesh bows that can be tied wherever you like – at the center of the bralette or on the strap, at the hip of the thong or on the back.

Finally, I adore the sweet, whimsical nature of Mimi Holliday’s bra and panty from the Joie de Vivre collection. So cute.

A Fashion Lovers Dream

Oh my, was this years Academy Awards refreshing. Of all the dresses that walked across our screens, I can’t say there was one disaster. Not that I would, I tend to focus on my favorites, but sincerely I don’t have any disappointments.

Winning top honors for me was Black Swan star, Mila Kunis, in a gorgeous lavender chiffon gown with tiered lace detailing and grosgrain ribbon waist by Elie Saab. The color was superb and unexpected. The dress was both delicate and feminine and unbelievably sexy. Some weren't sure how to take the exposed cleavage, but with her youth and body, I thought it worked flawlessly. Well done, Mila, you’re the breakout fashion star for me this award season.

Number two, Mandy Moore wowed us with this classic, ladylike gown from Monique Lhullier. I can only imagine how breathtaking the gown was in person. While I think the nude gown trend is being a little overplayed, you can’t deny how amazing they can look on the right person. Mandy’s light skin tone blends in perfectly with this gown and you almost don’t even notice the sheer fabric at the neck. She looks like such a lady. Finishing off this look is her hair and makeup done to perfection. The chestnut color and soft, romantic bun complete the package and give her top honors for me.

Halle Berry has taken a few misses of late, but not last night. This ethereal Marchesa gown must have been created with her in mind. The dress was made for a woman with a thin frame and delicate curves and Halle definitely fits the bill. I adore the beaded floral structure and whimsical arrangement of tulle. It’s truly one of those gowns that makes you want to gaze and discover every inch of constructed beauty.

In my opinion, Marchesa is the best thing to happen to award show fashion since Badgley Mischka.

A lot of folks may have missed this jaw-dropping gown worn by Camilla Alves. On the arm of her beau, Matthew McConaughey, she escaped most of the paparazzi. I typically prefer color at award shows because I don’t think the beauty of black comes across well on the Red Carpet. This one, however, is a showstopper. The simplicity and dramatic sexiness of the plunging neckline on this gown make Kaufman Franco a “one-to-watch” moving forward.

Did anyone not gasp when they saw knockout Jennifer Hudson get out of her limo? Wow, this woman has transformed herself into such a confident beauty and its written all over her face.

I LOVE the tangerine color of this Atelier Versace gown against her soft brown skin tone and beautifully swept back hair. She is styled to perfection with well suited accessories and classic, understated makeup that allows the dress to shine.

With no disappointments on the Red Carpet this year, choosing a top 5 was tough. Therefore, I couldn’t resist giving an honorable mention to two other stunners that caught my eye. First, Helen Mirren, in Vivienne Westwood. This woman has a knockout body and makes the mature years look like the place to be. Her gown is classic, yet modern and looks amazing with her silver locks. Gwyneth Paltrow also gets an honorable nod with her sleek, sophisticated Calvin Klein dress. I love its body conscious retro feel combined with her straight blonde hair. Gwyneth knows her body and knows her style and she gets it right every time. Her humble, sometimes bashful demeanor make her all the more lovable.

Hollywood stylists get an “A” this year for an amazing showing of fashion!

BHLDN ~ Part Deux

Behold my heart…

As if the dresses weren’t pretty enough, Anthropologie’s BHLDN collection brings us stunning shoes and accessories to complete the look.

To cover-up a girls bare shoulders on the big day, could these Bolero’s be any cuter? I fancy the Primrose Bolero, by Quillaree, above because of its ultra feminine raw-edged floral design and delicate blush color. It would flatter any skin tone.

The Bow-Topped Bolero, by Hitherto, to the left has a sweet Victorian flare with a modern twist.

May sound strange, but this photo makes me want to paint. It’s been a while since I’ve brought out the easel and acrylics (okay, years), but this colorful array of fashion delights may just give me the inspiration I need. It’s like candy for the soul. Purple and green and pink, oh my.

I digress. I’ve always been drawn to this shade of green – the Emerald Fields Kisslock Clutch is charming and vintage inspired. The tuck away strap transforms it into a shoulder bag.

The Gilded Trillium Kisslock Clutch is my favorite bag in the collection. Made with the softest grey lambskin and topped with a corsage of brass and pearl flowers, it has just enough room for phone and lipstick.

The BHLDN collection features amazing head pieces as well. The Languid Bow Headband, by Ban.Do, to the left has a fantastic 50’s style and would be perfect for a cocktail length dress.

I’m really smitten with the lovely Feathered Petals Headband by James Coviellio, which would be a beautiful finishing touch for bridesmaids. The rose shade shown here is exquisite and a perfect complement to neutral shades and browns. I think it also would provide a nice pop to a rich green or purple. Heck, I think I may buy this one to wear w/my spring & summer dresses.

This playful photo perfectly illustrates the whimsical feel of the Pompom Rose Headband by Pomp & Ceremony.

A colossal collection of raw-edged cotton voile petals perch atop a Liberty of London wrapped band. And it looks yummy with the gold dress.

Last, but not least, can we talk shoes?

What I would describe as the “perfect Cinderella shoe,” the Threshhold Slingback by Something Bleu, is delicate and supremely romantic with the addition of Festooned shoe clips from Twigs & Honey. The 4-inch pleated silk-satin peep-toes hide a half-inch platform inside, adding a little height and comfort.

And about Twigs & Honey…I highly recommend checking out their site for more incredible finds.

I love the classic style of the Beaded Brocade Slingback by Rada. Tied with a grosgrain bow and topped with subtle embroidery, this pointy-toe pair is sleek and softly feminine.

Oppositely, the Moonlit Peep-Toes are a sexy classic by Something Bleu. I loved the sweet touch that the pompom clips add to this look. Also really shows the versatility of this shoe.

And now for the perfect bridesmaid shoe, the lush, nearly glowing silk satin Bow-Topped Slingback from Something Bleu.

Charming and classic, the shoe also comes in ivory and saffron, which are exclusive colors for BHLDN.

I could not resist the vintage style and fitting name of the “Elopement Pumps.” The robin's-egg-blue leather slip-ons by Hey Lady have no shortage of detail.

I just love the scalloped edges around the back and tip of the shoe and the pretty pattern that lines the inside. These are charmers and would be perfect for a bride-to-be to wear to one of her special parties leading up to the big day.

Anthropologie – Will You Marry Me?

Take my breath away…

Anthropologie has officially launched BHLDN (pronounced “Beholden”), a collection of breathtaking bridal dresses and accessories. The line features heirloom inspired wedding gowns, bridesmaid and occasion dresses, vintage-inspired jewelry, shoes, unique headpieces, accessories and even lingerie.

There is so much beauty to behold in this collection that I can’t possibly do it justice with one post. Here I’ll share my favorite dresses and will report back soon on the amazing accessories.

To say I’m an Anthropologie devotee is a bit of an understatement, so it’s almost cruel that they are launching BHLDN in 2011 – I was married in 2002 for goodness sake!

Hmmm…I wonder if Jay would agree to marry me again??…..?? ;o)

Anthropologie has created a loyal customer base that is unique, feminine and whimsical - and they honored that customer by designing a wedding brand that would follow her through the most important life transition she will likely ever make – as a wife.

The brand will create some of their own signature gowns and also will feature established and up-and-coming guest designers like Fleur Wood, Tracy Reese, and Catherine Deane, who will create exclusive designs from tailored and voluminous to embroidered and embellished.

Retail prices for the brand range from $1,000 to $4,000 for gowns, and $200 to $600 for event dresses.

BHLDN was designed to celebrate a woman's personal style and to provide a confident, guiding voice to help create an extraordinary experience for brides.

What kind of bride are you?

One of my favorite sections on the site – this page helps guide you to the best gowns and accessories to match your personal style. By asking a few cute questions – like where your dream wedding location would be and what your friends will remember most about your special day years down the road – they help identify the kind of bride you are.

Naturally, I took the “quiz” and the results were pretty spot on. I was identified as a “Nostalgic Romantic” bride – someone that embodies tradition and timeless beauty. As a girl that carries vintage hankies in my handbag (yes, they belonged to my Nana), I think that’s probably a true assessment.

Further than describing my style though, the site then led me to an assortment of dresses and accessories that fit my described style and that coordinated with one another.

Also located on the site is a personalized area where brides can create “mood boards” to share with friends and family.

MyBHLDN continues to develop and soon will feature things like advice sharing and other inspiration, including coveted images, color palettes and style icons.

Anthropologie’s goal with BHLDN was to help a woman create an event that reflects her own unique perspective and to give a bride that edit she’s been searching for—with heirloom-quality wedding gowns, artisanal hair adornments, footwear and lingerie. They also wanted happy bridesmaids in mix-and-match frocks with rich hues and unexpected details.

Beyond the dress, they wanted to start a conversation with their customer—building a resource where she can come to find inspiration and to share with those closest to her.

Super Bowl XLV – Packer Style

Go PACK Go!

If it can’t be my beloved Detroit Lions going to the Super Bowl (and I have a feeling that might be a while), then all of my cheers go to the Green Bay Packers, who will meet the Pittsburg Steelers on February 6. I consider myself an honorary Packers fan as my dear friend, Sara Otto Shunkwiler (a Wisconsin native), allows me to cheer them on with her.

The Packers have arguably the best fans in the NFL. They sport green and gold year-round and don “Cheeseheads” to support their Pack. On game day it is nearly impossible to get anywhere near the stadium and during away games the area is a ghost town as fans are either at home or filling Packer bars to watch the game.

Every home game has been sold out since 1960, with more than 80,000 names on the season-ticket waiting list. When someone dies, they often will their tickets to a family member.

Sara tells me that Super Bowl Sunday will be like a national holiday in Wisconsin – every store will be closed and streets will be deserted as people are glued to their TV’s.

I think that Green Bay’s “super fandom” is due in no small part to the fact that the team is owned by the public – their fans. They are the only NFL team that doesn’t have an owner. All money earned goes back into the club.

They have a vested interested in their team and it shows.

Founded in 1919 by Earl Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the Green Bay Packers are deeply rooted in the Wisconsin city where they began. They were named after a local meat processing plant, the Indian Packing Company, which paid for the first uniforms. Starting in the 1920s, the Green Bay Football Corp. made a series of public stock offerings. In 1950, 1,900 local residents each put up $25 a share to buy the team.

Green Bay is the second-oldest franchise in the NFL and they have a rich history of championships, including winning the first Super Bowl in 1966.

They’ve won twelve championships (more than any other team in the NFL) and are looking to secure their fourth Super Bowl victory next week.

The team has historic rivalries with the Chicago Bears, whom they beat to get to this years “dance”; and the Detroit Lions, whom they have played since the 1930s. The Packers also share a fierce rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings, ironically now the home of former quarterback, Brett Favre.

They all belong to the NFC North, a.k.a. the "Black and Blue Division" due to the intensity of the rivalry between the four teams.

The Packers have no shortage of players to root for - Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the tough job of leading his team to victory with a strong and accurate arm and also being the “boyfriend” of every lady in Green Bay.

The guy must be exhausted by the end of the day!

Other Packers that are always fun to watch - Veteran Wide Receiver Donald Driver, Wide Receiver Greg Jennings (Western Michigan), Running Backs Brandon Jackson & John Kuhn and of course Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji.

Rooting on the Packers and players begs the question – what to wear? This post is filled with great fan gear from NFL Shop, Packers Pro Shop and Etsy (click on any photo for “where to buy”).

But what I really want to know is how can I look like this guy? I’m pretty sure there isn’t a single Packer fan that doesn’t own and proudly wear a Cheesehead hat. Teasing them only increases their spirit as they cheer on their boys in green and gold.

You don’t have to look far in Wisconsin or on the web for Cheesehead gear, but I found

It’s really too bad that Super Bowl’s can’t be held on a teams home turf because I can’t think of anything that would make Super Bowl XLV more exciting than watching it take place at the famed Lambeau Field. I’ve never been there, but I love watching touchdowns in that stadium. I will never forget watching Sunday Night Football on December 11, 2005 - Packers vs. Lions.

I knew that our friends, Ben and Sara and Craig, were at the game and sitting near the end zone, so I was looking out for them. Watching, watching….and there it was - Lions wide receiver Roy Williams catches an incredible TD pass and jumps up for the infamous Lambeau Leap right into the arms of Ben and Craig (captured in the above photo – Craig is on the left and you can’t see Ben because he’s behind Roy Williams holding him up. Craig snagged the ball). I literally could not believe my eyes! We lost the game that night, but Ben, Sara and Craig got the moment of a lifetime.

Hopefully, the Packers will continue their magic on Feb. 6 and capture another Super Bowl title for their beloved fans. Go Pack Go!

2011 Golden Globe Report

Golden Glam

Can there be any way to describe Anne Hathaway in this golden sequin gown other than “Jaw-dropping”? It’s no secret that she is a client of the revered Rachel Zoe, so she never misses. BUT – her appearance at the Globes in Giorgio Armani Prive this year has got to be her best yet. She’s never been in better shape, so she was a complete knockout in this sexy dress.

Front, side or back it was amazing. I’m sure there was a collective gasp by passerby that night when she turned to reveal the back. WOW!

Her make-up was flawless and her hair done to perfection to suit this dress.

Angelina Jolie comes in second with a dazzling emerald green dress from Atelier Versace. She was right on trend, as green and a return to 80’s chic seemed to dominate the evening. As a child of the 80’s, I am NOT thrilled at the resurgence of any “fashion” from the period, but the first two dresses in this post seemed to do it well. The color and draping of this garment are both vibrant and elegant and perfectly suited for the calm and cool Angelina. To me, this is the type of gown made for the Globes…save the Princess Grace style dresses for the Oscars.

As lovely as Jane Krakowski is, she wouldn’t be considered a fashionista in most circles, which is why I was so pleasantly surprised by this stunning gown. She looks radiant in the periwinkle color (make-up perfectly coordinated) and the draping highlights her well toned arms and adorable baby bump. You could just feel the joy of impending motherhood jumping out of the screen…and how beautiful she felt too. Well done, Badgley Mischka, Jane looked amazing.

Oh Sofia Vergara – do we not all want this bod? And she KNOWS it! She loves showing off her curves and you can’t help but not hate her because of that delightful personality. (I’m sure even Vera Wang herself couldn’t be mad at Sofia when she pronounced her name repeatedly as Vera Wong).

This gown was made for Sofia – the color was a standout, the black belt a perfect finishing detail and the cut followed every curve to a tee. She chose to keep her hair down and flowing which added to the appeal.

My fifth pick is Leighton Meester in Burberry. While I know this dress was not a fan fave and has taken a lot of criticism, I adored it on her. Certainly, I understand why folks didn't care for it…it’s not a typical award show dress. But Leighton is a style icon of her generation, which made this an amazing choice for her. She’s got a drop dead figure – a must to pull off this look – and a unique indie style. I love that she chose something that was fashion forward and set her apart from all others on the Red Carpet. The Globes are about knowing yourself and taking appropriate risks to demonstrate who you are. Way to go, Leighton, you’re an original and looked amazing in the subtly sexy dress.

Last but certainly not least, an Honorable Mention goes to Maria Menounos in a stunning dress by Michigan’s own Pamella Roland. The blush tones were gorgeous and I loved the contrast of shabby frayed edges mixed with a sparkly neckline. Her hourglass figure does a little something for the gown too. Thanks Pamella Roland (DeVos) for making Michigan shine in Hollywood!

Stella & Dot

Style Your Life

There’s a great jewelry trend sweeping the nation, and it’s called Stella & Dot. Launched a few short years ago, the eclectic and often vintage inspired collection is led by Jessica Herrin and Blythe Harris. The line was named for their grandmothers, Stella and Dot, and features pieces inspired by jewelry found in each of their jewelry boxes. This really resonates with me because I often wear pieces from my Nana’s jewelry box – now my most cherished possession. This necklace and statement ring are two of my favorite classics from Stella & Dot.

I’m also a big fan of brooches, which are seeing a huge resurgence in popularity. Stella & Dot has done a great job of designing replicas of vintage styles as well as newer takes on them. The beautiful styling in their lookbooks show a variety of ways to wear the classic piece – as a stand alone or with their La Coco necklaces. After splurging this week on new jewelry for myself, I’m now the proud owner of these three pretty brooches.

The press and celebrities also have taken notice of Stella & Dot and the jewelry is popping up everywhere. Giuliana Rancic, Jessica Lowndes, AnnaLynne McCord, Penelope Cruz and Jane Krakowski are all fans of the line.

The February issue of InStyle magazine (pg. 134) features the Revival Tassle Necklace, which is one of my favorites from the new Spring/Summer 2011 “A Brave New World” collection.

Always chic and refined, Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon is one of the celebrities whose style I admire most. Her look is always pulled together and consistent, whether she’s hanging with her kids, bumming around L.A. or attending a premiere.

Happiness looks good on her too. Recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she was all smiles wearing a Dolce & Gabbana dress and Jimmy Choo peep-toes. Her new engagement to agent Jim Toth probably has a little to do with that smile too.

New Years Eve Sparkle

Welcome 2011!

With New Years Eve upon us, it’s seems fitting to celebrate one of 2010’s top trends – sequins. Whether you plan to ring in the New Year with a formal affair, a casual party with friends or watching Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin Eve from the comfort of your own couch – sequins can add that special sparkle to your festivities. The key to wearing sequins is doing so in moderation. Following are a few trends by category to help inspire you:

The Jacket

Personally, I think sequin jackets are pretty spectacular.

Needless to say, they are not for the shy at heart. Wearing one will guarantee a noticeable entrance.

Blake Lively pairs hers with a crisp white shirt and short black shorts. The girl knows how to flaunt those gams. What I love about this look is its classic style with subtle, yet stunning sexiness.

For a more sporty style, I love the flirty sequin bomber jacket in platinum by LaRok.

The single button jacket with sequin trim from Anthropologie is a little more understated and would be perfect for a dressy evening.

The Pant

I give great props to the girl who can rock a pair of sequin pants like this smokin hot pair by Isabel Marant. Not the slightest bit practical – but that's the point, isn’t it?

I love the way this pair and the J.Crew version below (on Jenna Lyons, featured in Elle Decor)are paired with casual, unexpected tops. Gives them a little understated feminism.

The J.Crew pant is constructed in a slouchy, “sweats” like cut, fully lined and made with distressed sequins (individually hand applied).

The Sweater

If you are attending a “dressed down” celebration, but still want to bring a little holiday sparkle – a cute sequin sweater is the perfect fit.

How adorable is this sequin sweatshirt by Dolan? It has a tough-chic style with a hint of femininity in its inverted-puff sleeve detail. Frayed, rolled chiffon trim lends a cool finish.

Another great choice is this reasonably priced cardigan from Nordstrom with raw-edge chiffon ruffles tracing the edges. This one would look great with a pair of jeans for your New Years Eve party and dressed up with a pair of trousers for work. Great buy.

The Top

The simplest sequin wardrobe addition is a pretty sequin top. This classic style from MICHAEL Michael Kors has a sweet golden color and flattering draped neckline.

Also loving the pretty layered top by Robbi & Nikki. This blouse has a sheer overlay of pale chiffon over the sequin top, creating a nice contrast.

Ann Taylor has a great luxe short-sleeve tee with just a simple band of subtle sequins. Very elegant.

The Dress

Oh, why can’t we all look like Eva Longoria in this sequin number?

I’m overwhelmed with the gorgeous sequin dresses out there. Nicole Ritchie’s Winter Kate line features this sexy gold sequin dress with a dramatic cowl back. Ooh la la.

Also, loving this Haute Hippie dress with sequin-encrusted bodice and a skirt of plush marabou plumes.

Alicia & Olivia created this adorable strapless silk dress featuring a sequined bodice and a ruched waistband. Super cute and comfy.

Finally, Cynthia Vincent’s Twelfth Street collection features this “nightshirt” style sequin dress that looks amazing and feels oh-so comfy. This dress would look sexy alone with a pair of heels and also great with a pair of leggings and cinched at the waist with a belt. Yummy.

The Accessories

If you’re looking to add just a little pinch of sparkle, simple accessories will do the trick.

Love these pretty headbands from Etsy. The gold headband from Royale by Lucia Bella is stunning and would look great with golden locks.

It’s silver counterpart from Fink Shop features shiny silver beads, pearls and rhinestones.

A Handmade Holiday: Christmas Stockings

Christmas is filled with so many wonderful traditions. One of my favorites is hanging our pretty stockings every year. Growing up, my sister and I were always thrilled when we were finished opening all of the presents Santa brought us and then realized there were still goodies to unwrap in our stockings! Yesterday, my niece Lilly was over for a visit – her 5-year-old eyes were gazing at all the pretty ornaments and she loved picking her favorites.

She pointed out how much she loved my stockings and commented “Aunt Beckie, you always have such pretty things.” My sister who was standing behind her looked at me with a wink (and maybe an eye-roll).

Her words and eyes of wonder inspired me to write this post on Christmas Eve. Surely all of your stockings are hung and filled to the brim, but I wanted to share a few beautiful handmade designs that I was delighted to find on Etsy.

Our stockings (pictured above – and on our mantle below) were created for me years ago by the talented Alicia Paulson. Alicia is a celebrated artist that creates beautiful things by sewing, crocheting, embroidering and more. She also has written a few great books on embroidery and patterns. This adorable design is from The Thread House, a great Etsy vendor that creates all orders by custom request. Your stocking will be a one-of-a-kind treasure made uniquely for its namesake. The stockings are made with a soft fleece lining - you choose the colors for the main, interior and accent fabrics. You also can choose the image/animal you would like to adorn the front and have the option of including an embroidered message.

The designer will send you a sketch of the stocking and a photo of materials for approval before starting the stocking.

Dansmamaisonilya, an Etsy shop owner from Montreal, Quebec created these delicate beauties. They are made from recycled wool fabrics – this one is my favorite, trimmed with red felt flowers and croquet.

The others shown below feature blue and pink flowers, recycled wool blanket pieces and ornament designs.

This vendor also notes that her designs are made in a smoke-free home – a nice touch.

I love the rich colors in this elegant felted wool Christmas stocking by Dream Adventures.

The back is a solid gray felted wool, with a strong black front mixed with reds and grays. The stocking is unlined with a hand created flower and hand applied wool roving to create the curly-q's (see below for a close-up).

Also by Dream Adventures, this stocking is whimsical and fun, made in a natural color felted wool. The designer created it from a recycled wool sweater that she felted and sewed to make the stocking. The stripes and circles are dyed felted wool and then sewn onto the body of the stocking. Red buttons finish it off.

There is something so regal about this beautiful plaid stocking by Peter Valentina. The pretty ruffled velvet trim adds a feminine touch to it’s traditional appearance. The body of the stocking is 100% wool.

Custom orders also are available by this vendor.

Last but not least – I love these luxurious stockings by Four Monkey’s Heirlooms. They are made with a great attention to detail with four unique, yet coordinating styles – a selling point that I love. The body is velvet (available in red or green) and the top cuff, heel & toe accents are a realistic chocolate fur. They are lined with a chocolate cotton fabric that is attached only at the top so they can easily be pulled most of the way out to clean. Each stocking is made the same on both sides so you can turn them either way you choose.

Heirloom Chic

Vintage and vintage-inspired accessories are wildly popular these days, with designers and retailers making them the focal point of their offerings.

As a longtime lover of vintage jewels, this is great for me. When my beloved Nana passed away a few years ago, I inherited her beautiful jewelry – an eclectic mix of colorful costume beads, vintage brooches and antique strands of pearls. I wear the pieces often and love mixing them with my jewelry. I treasure them more than I can possibly articulate because I adored her so much.

Nana’s jewelry is precious because it was special to her – and will be passed down for generations. Lockets are timeless and have the same special quality. They make a loving, uniquely personal gift for someone special and can create a new family heirloom.

A bit of history - lockets first became popular during the Victorian era. The locket was meant to be worn next to the heart of its owner, either via a long chain or clipped to one's bodice with a pin. During the U.S. Civil War, soldiers often left a lock of hair at home, which was placed into a locket by their sweethearts upon news of their death.

Lockets are fascinating because they tell a story and they hold special photos or meaningful mementos. While searching for lockets to write about for this post, I was in awe over the number of unique pieces available. It was so hard to choose just a few. My favorites are featured here, but I’d encourage you to search for lockets on Etsy to see what treasures you can discover.

I am absolutely in love with the delicate, romantic beauty of the “Juliet’s Rose” locket by The Bijou Babe. The locket itself features a rose guilloche center and is surrounded by tiny milk glass beads. The locket is suspended by a hand fabricated chain of beautifully faceted rose quartz beads, pearls and milk glass beads. This charming locket from the Hollywood Hillbilly is so sweet and feminine. The vintage raw brass, copper lined locket is decorated with a 1970's vintage autumn floral cabochon surrounded by a chain of vintage rhinestones. Suspended above the locket is a facetted rust stone, a vintage copper colored pearl and a moss colored Czech glass leaf. Designer, Heather Berry, calls this locket her favorite amongst all of the necklaces she has created. The vintage locket is made of brass and its 38mm diameter is large enough to hold a good sized photograph or small keepsake. The design features a bouquet of pressed Czech flowers in shades of teal blue and green. The vine is also brass, aged to a true verdigris patina (not painted). This beautiful locket by Botanical Bird has an engraved floral pattern on the front and is adorned with a lovely verdigris bird and two flower vines, which all dangle in front.

This sweet Victorian locket from Angela’s studio carries a vintage style smoky glass gem and a glass pearl hanging from a screened bow. The brass chain measures 18", but can be lengthened or shortened upon request.

I’m drawn to this whimsical locket from 55 Maple designs. The antique bronze and brass make it a perfect accessory for the winter months. This necklace features a bird on a wire pendant in antique bronze with a tiny vintage raw brass locket suspended from the pendant. The locket has a peachy orange flower adhered to the front for a feminine touch and a sweet ribbon tied to the top.

This truly special antique cameo piece by Darling Jewels is very old and rare. The cameo appears to be hand carved out of shell and bezel set. It has a rhinestone on each side and initials on the back.

Jasper Hillburn created this one of a kind necklace that features a lovely vintage gold tone locket with a watch embedded into it. The locket watch hangs from beautiful rolo chain, antique crystal rosary beads and clasps together with an old timer lobster clasp.

This one is a must have for me. “Keep Calm Carry On” is a lovely quote that was produced by the British government in 1939 at the beginning of World War II to raise the morale of the British public in the case of invasion. The saying has taken on a resurgence in popularity in recent times. A few years ago, my friend Hope and I first noticed it on a poster in a boutique window while in North Carolina on a business trip. We loved it and decided to adopt it as our motto. Since then, I’ve noticed the charming words popping up in a lot of unique places.

So, I seriously must have this necklace. Each locket has unique tarnish characteristics which lend to the vintage appeal – making your locket uniquely yours.

I’ve been drawing since I was a young child and can honestly say its one of my first true loves. I don’t get to do it nearly as often as I’d like, which is why I love admiring others work as often as I can. Art is such a personal thing for every individual and can make the kind of present that a loved one will treasure forever. While you’re digging deep to find a meaningful gift for someone special, consider searching through Etsy for unique artists that offer everything from original works to reproductions – something for every budget. I’ve highlighted fashion illustrations here because I find them breathtaking and I happen to be a fan of all of the artists featured here. Leigh Viner, Dallas Shaw and Milda Bublys are my favorites – I admire them for their work and their fashion spirit. They’re pretty nice gals too. Finding the Perfect Gift

With Thanksgiving behind us, we now turn our attention to finding that perfect gift for our loved ones. Heck, with the busy schedules we all keep, we’re lucky to find “A” gift, much less the “perfect” one. Truth be told, it doesn’t have to be that hard. Even if I get every item on my wish list, nothing ever compares to the presents my nieces and nephews get me from the Secret Santa Shop at school. The vision of them picking it out special for me - all by themselves - has meaning beyond measure.

What makes those gifts so special is that they hold the innocence of thought behind personal giving. Handmade gifts have a very similar effect. Michigan is full of small, unique downtowns like Plymouth and Rochester, and bigger urban shopping districts like Royal Oak, Birmingham, Ann Arbor and our beloved Detroit. These areas are filled with merchants whose lives are dedicated to finding those special items for you and making your holiday shopping experience pleasant and rewarding. Yesterday was Small Business Saturday and I was inspired by the overwhelming movement to support businesses in our small towns.

Knowing some folks are better than others at selecting personal gifts, I decided to do a little digging myself. Over the next few weeks, I’ll do my best to find hidden treasures that I know would put a smile on my face, if wrapped in a pretty box for me. Hopefully they will provide great ideas for you (be sure to click on the photos if you like something – they will direct you where to buy). Today, my focus is on handmade pillows all found on Etsy – but remember that if you have the time to shop your downtowns…you can find many of these types of treasures there. I’m focusing on pillows because they can warm up a home or office and make a great, thoughtful gift.

As my colleagues can attest, I have a pillow and blanket in my office and am known to use them….perhaps a pretty cot might be a good gift idea for me. Wonder if they have any of those on Etsy? :o)

Either of these floral inspired pillows (and the one at the top of the page) would look great in my office – everyone knows I can’t get enough of ruffles & flowers.

Pillows are great because they can be surprisingly personal – in obvious ways like the monogrammed versions below or by simply fitting the style and color scheme of a friends home.

I think this pillow is simple and cool and perfect for that special someone that has an appreciation for nostalgia and vintage holiday style.

This is a fun, “low-risk” gift because its seasonal. The recipient will bring it out each holiday and think of you as they display it every year.

It’s basic, rugged style will fit any decor, giving it yet another advantage.

For fans of the whimsy – who doesn’t adore lovebirds? Over the years, I’ve become as fond of them as I am of ruffles and flowers.

I fell in love with this sweet birdcage pillow with its lovebirds giving each other a heartwarming gaze. The handmade flower at the top and mix of pattern and color, make it extra special.

Etsy is also filled with lots of fun pillows that kids would love. I found these adorable little owl pillows (below) with lots of different pattern combinations. A great solution if you have many kids to buy for and are cautious about buying them different presents (for fear they will like another's better). Here, you can select their favorite colors and they then have a unique, but similar present.

And finally…for the humorous friends and family in your life – these witty little finds are sure to be a big hit and may even cause someone to take action (Door #3 please).

Thanksgiving Style

A Tradition of Style

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s a day where everyone makes time to give thanks, say thanks and to be thankful for all they have. It seems no matter where you are, who you are, how much you have or how much you don’t have – this day provides all of us the chance to reflect and realize what a blessing this life really is.

My Thanksgiving always starts out with the Parade Company’s Turkey Trot in downtown Detroit. Rain or shine, thousands of metro Detroiters gather to start their day with a healthy run along the streets of Detroit.

Folks lining up early and eagerly awaiting America’s Thanksgiving Parade cheer us on – it’s the greatest feeling.

Following the run, I’m ready for my traditional holiday meal and gathering with family.

I love dressing for Thanksgiving because it’s such a celebratory day….and well…I love fall colors. It’s important to dress comfortably for Thanksgiving - to make room for the excess of food and to lie around watching football in comfort.

So what to wear on the big day? Definitely nothing with fuss. I always like to go for an autumnal cozy sweater and great accessories. Anthropologie always has an amazing array of sweet sweaters that make you want to celebrate everyday, but provide the extra special touch on holidays (like the one featured at the opening of the post).

Accessories are the best way to put the holiday in your Thanksgiving style. Etsy is my favorite place to find unique, special pieces that mark a special occasion. I love the delicate camera pendant I found from Necklacependantworld. With all of the family photos taken on this day, its the perfect fit. For a more traditional fall fare, the acorn necklace from RhondasTreasures is great too.

Fall inspired headbands and hairpieces are inexpensive, simple ways to create a special holiday look and Etsy is full of these handmade treasures. A few are featured above in this post. I also adore this little hair pin to the left from KimArt…and only $4.50!

Necklaces are an easy breezy way to jazz up your holiday look. The pretty pieces above make a great statement and are made with divine craftsmanship.

And for a little kitschy cool…who can resist these Thanksgiving inspired accessories? I mean…common – Turkey cufflinks? Turkey leg pendant? You know you know someone to buy these for….!!!

Fashion In Detroit – Motor City Denim

What better subject for my final Fashion In Detroit post than Motor City Denim. Detroit native and Project Runway alum, Joe Faris, created the line which is manufactured right here in Detroit.

The edgy collection – for men and women – includes jeans, skirts, dresses, western shirts, t-shirts, outerwear and accessories. Fitting for a line manufactured in Detroit, it’s branded as “Industrial Couture,” and mixes high-fashion elements with an industrial edge.

Faris is a casual kinda guy and wanted to bring that easy but fashionable appeal to the t-shirt and jeans crowd. The pieces have a cool rocker chic, but they’re very accessible and wearable.

Faris has spent his career working with denim and leather, which made this line the perfect fit – and allowed him to take his first steps toward establishing an apparel industry in southeast Michigan. He realized through the success of the first Fashion In Detroit that there was potential for an industry here.

For years he has dreamed of starting a small factory here and controlling production. As he was contemplating how to do this, he found Mark D’Andreta, president of TD Industrial Coverings, a Sterling Heights maker of coveralls for auto industry assembly line robots.

D'Andreta, was looking to diversify production, especially after a tough time in the automotive industry. He had virtually all the machines necessary to manufacture the product – and the line was born.

The partnership is the perfect marriage because Joe can be the creative force behind the design of the product and Mark can run the shop.

Motor City Denim Co. is aggressively working to ramp up production and have clothes in stores in time for the holidays.

Capping off the show was a catwalk with five celebrities that Joe collaborated with to support breast cancer awareness month.

Joe teamed up with WXYZ Channel 7’s Christy McDonald and Erin Nicole, Detroit 1-8-7 star, Erin Cummings, WDIV Local 4’s Lauren Podell and Detroit’s own Karen Newman.

The ladies each designed their own garments to be auctioned off to support breast cancer research.

Don’t they look great??!!

Fashion In Detroit - Prophetik

Wearable Philosophy

Detroiter’s recently enjoyed the special treat of a visit by Prophetik designer, Jeff Garner, whose line graced the runway at Fashion In Detroit. He documented his visit to the city in this video. Prophetik was launched eight years ago in Franklin, Tennessee and focuses on combining environmentally friendly materials to create sustainable men’s and womenswear.

Without a doubt, Prophetik was the most theatrical of all the FID shows, wowing the crowd with live music and a grass runway. Honestly though, the beautiful clothing is what made this show memorable. With its romantic renaissance flair, it takes you to another time, while also highlighting modern, wearable trends.

Locally, the line is available at Perpetua Boutique Organique in Ann Arbor.

Prophetik uses plant and earth based dyes to create all of their colors. They use a low impact production process with minimal water and no toxic additives. They’re developing a “zero-waste” operating model for their dye production facility based in Nashville, TN. Through their natural dye research farm and regional farmer collective, their dye house sustainability cultivates the raw materials for their colors.

I found this collection, and its designer, to be fascinating. A few interesting facts about Jeff – He also is a consultant for Whole Foods apparel buying division; and he was contracted to design a sustainable carrying case for the iPhone as part of their eco soft goods development, which is set to launch in Apple Stores worldwide.

Garner also commits proceeds from each of his shows to a charity whose mission reflects the Prophetik philosophy.

Fashion In Detroit – Femilia Couture

Detroit's Rising Stars

I’m a little behind on my blog, but would be remiss if I didn’t report on a few more collections from Fashion In Detroit. Two of Detroit’s Rising Stars - and IADT grads - were first to show on Day 2 and did not disappoint. Fotoula Lambros and Emily Thornhill founded their label, Femilia Couture, in 2007 and have quickly become Detroit’s fashion darlings. Their innovative line uses 95% organic and sustainable materials. Fibers include cotton, bamboo, soy, hemp, linen, silk blends and eco-friendly fabrics.

The Spring/Summer collection was inspired by natural elements that compliment the organic fabrics they’re using.

The collection was presented with a blank palette, creating a stunning, ethereal runway show. This allowed the designs to take center stage along with the imagination of the customer.

While the collection was shown completely in white, pieces can be ordered in a variety of colors, including: Ecru, Ochre, Crimson, Onyx, Royal, Violet, Kelly Green, and Gunmetal.

Designer Fotoula Lambros calls this approach “customizable Ready-to-Wear for the masses,” and allows clients to order colors that match their personal style.

The Spring/Summer 2011 “Future Vintage” collection uses unconventional draping and layering to create a contemporary classic look that results in less wasted materials. Whatever is left in excess is reused in trims.

In the last few years, the girls have moved all operations of their company from home-based separate studios to one quaint boutique in fashionable Ferndale. The label is handmade and produced in its Michigan based showroom and the designers are dedicated to keeping it that way.

Femilia Couture is a supporter of the Arts in metro Detroit and has been involved in events focusing on creative professionals and the community.

In 2008 they were honored with the title of Best Emerging Designer by Real Detroit Weekly – and I can certainly see many more accolades coming their way.

Fashion In Detroit – Student Show

Detroit’s future in

fashion design!

In it’s 2009 Inaugural year, Fashion In Detroit put the city on the fashion map by producing an exciting New York style runway event with top design talent. The show’s dynamic executive committee (Joe Faris, Karen Buscemi, Leslie Pilling, Lians, K’Kio Hardin and Rino) basked in the glow of success and quickly started planning to make 2010 even better. And it was.

For the second year, I had the sincere privilege of coordinating the student show for Fashion In Detroit. I’ve been working with faculty at Wayne State University, Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State University, Northwood University and International Academy of Design & Technology for the past several months to select the top design talent from their fashion programs to participate in the show.

Twelve students were selected and challenged to design what they do best. We wanted students to show us their strength and what represented them as designers. This approach brought an eclectic mix of style and was an impressive showing of the future of design talent in Michigan. Because I’m so proud to have been affiliated with these talented individuals, I’d like to share a little bit about each of them and show off the designs from the show:

Wayne State University

Wayne State University showcased four designers from their Fashion Design and Merchandising program.

Kim Wiechers designed the gorgeous dress at the opening of this post (left: Kim poses with her model, Kylie, fresh off the runway). She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in fashion design. As a child, she remembers always looking for ways to alter her brothers “hand-me-downs,” a passion that has grown with adulthood. Her grandmother started her on the path to a fashion career by teaching her how to knit when she was a young girl. Unfortunately, her grandmother passed away last year after battling cancer. In her honor, Kim recently named her brand “Bella Bridgette,” after her and hopes to one day have a very successful company.

Katie Rizak is 22-years-old and hails from Dearborn. She is a senior at Wayne and has been sketching and sewing for over six years. After graduation she plans to move to New York City to pursue a fashion design career. She describes her design aesthetic as hard edge, sexy, dark and dramatic.

Originally from Belarus - former Soviet Union Republic, Mila Pershyna’s relationship with fashion began when she started making paper dolls and dressing them at seven years old, making mini outfits for Barbie. She enjoys creating garments that will fit the body flawlessly and express individuality.

Staying current on market and fashion trends has helped her to develop a strong eye for color, fabrics and silhouettes. She enjoys a challenge, problem solving and learning about the product process.

Jamie Powell is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. She has participated in the Fashion Design and Merchandising Organization as Public Relations Chair, producing a successful fashion show in 2009. She also became a Gordy Foundation Scholar in 2010.

Not only has she appeared in numerous local fashion shows and chosen as a student designer for Fashion in Detroit 2009, but her Spring/Summer 2010 Collection “Ahoy Boys” was featured in Detroit Free Press (Metro Mix). Jamie’s future plans are to obtain an MBA degree and begin career in fashion design.

Michigan State University

We were thrilled to have Michigan State on board this year with designer, Jennifer Henry, from the Apparel & Textile Design program at the school.

Jen Henry is a senior graduating in May. This year she is serving as fundraising chair for MSU’s Student Apparel Design Association. When she graduates, she is looking forward to moving to NYC or continuing her education by attending grad school

for a Master’s in Design. She loves designing evening dresses and innovative pieces that are eye-catching on the runway.

Eastern Michigan University

Two designers from my alma mater, Eastern Michigan University, participated in the show. Melody Murdock received her BS in Apparel, Textile and Merchandising and is a current graduate student at EMU. She is a dressmaker by trade and a lover of all things textile.

Dayna Lewis-Jones is a senior at EMU, pursuing a Bachelors degree in Apparel, Textile and Merchandising and a minor in Marketing. She is a member of student organizations including Fashion Forum and Fashionality of Dernier Cri. Dayna is actively working toward a career in design. Her line, antiWIFEY Clothing, was founded in 2008 to display confidence in women from the inside

out. It is a crochet line that offers unique dress, swim wear and accessories to fashion forward individuals.

International Academy of Design & Technology

Three talented designers from IADT rocked the runway.

Indie rock music publicist by day and fashion designer by night, Janelle Rogers lives by the motto “green light go” (the name of her music pr company). Incorporating a vintage flair and touch of whimsy, her clothing line, Envious Takeoff, often merges that rock and roll lifestyle

with her clients and favorite bands serving as inspiration for the pieces she creates. Her ultimate dream: to see one of her dresses worn by actress and songstress, Zooey Deschanel.

At 23-years-old, Denae Graves, is excited about life after college. She is a fine arts student from IADT and loves designing pants – “You can hand paint them, make them fitted or loose and even add things like chains and studs.” Her theme for Fashion In Detroit was urban chic/glam.

Janelle Schneider was inspired to begin sewing and designing clothing by her mother and grandmother at an early age. Her favorite genre to design is woman's sportswear. She currently is starting her junior year at IADT Detroit and hopes to stay in the greater Detroit area after graduation.

Northwood University

Two students from Northwood University’s Fashion Marketing & Management program showed their outstanding work.

Julie Mason comes all the way from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She is a senior at Northwood and will be graduating in the winter with a BBA. She loves to travel, sketch, all kinds of music and of course costume design. She was recently honored to serve as the Student Design chair for the 2010 Northwood Fashion Show where some of her designs were showcased. Her dream career is to wwork with directors and music artists to collaborate on looks for film and stage.

Lauren Moore is a sophomore at Northwood and has participated in

various student programs such as the Northwood Style Show and Auto Show. Lauren also is a member of fashion group, DECA, and Alpha Chi Omega. After college, she plans to attend the Art Institute of Chicago to further her career in fashion design.

Each of the students documented in this post has a bright future in fashion design. Those of us that love this industry know that the business isn’t easy to break into and it takes a lot of passion, hard work and dedication. These women have what it takes and I’m excited to see what they accomplish!

These Boots are Made for…..Hunting

Hunting Boots…in the City!

My husband, Jay (the urban cowboy in the 10 gallon hat), just returned home from a trip to Wyoming hunting for Elk. While he had an amazing time, the Elk remain elusive – the only trophy that came home is this big hat.

I’m not a real lover of the sport of hunting, but it has become beloved to my husband over the years. His best friend, Ben, introduced him to it and it’s become a yearly rite of passage. Seems fitting as we head into deer season that I should cover hunting style. Right?

Perhaps I’d like hunting a little more if I could wear any of the boots on this page while doing it (insert wink here)? SOME of them are practical (insert another wink). Seriously though, Tommy Hilfiger has revived his brand with a great fall collection of boots. Most notably, with his classic duck boot. This sexy knee-high rendition features brown suede on top with a blue rubber base and is exactly on-trend. It looks adorable with a casual khaki skirt or as shown here with a cool pair of fall shorts and tights.

The short duck bootie is a little more practical, with the same cool vibe and rugged edge. Both would be great for tailgating too.

This essential “Hunting Bootie” has enjoyed such overwhelming popularity that it is sold out in many places (Call 1-888-Tommy-4U to be added to the waiting list).

This sophisticated flannel bootie by Pour la Victoire is a little bit hunting, a little bit hiking. The September issue of InStyle magazine featured a red and grey plaid flannel version that I couldn’t find anywhere. The grey flannel is probably more practical and polished – a great substitute.

Aldo always does a great job with trendy styling at a very friendly price-point. Below are two of my favorite “hunting” styles. Couldn’t resist the camouflage wedge bootie, which would surely throw any deer off your scent (or stop him in his tracks!).

I’m crazy about every boot from Tory Burch this season. She perfected military and now I’m sweet on her hunting/hiking styles too.

The “Halima” suede bootie to the right would look so cute with season staples - a hunter orange coat and camouflage pants. Hot stuff. I mean…what hunter doesn’t enjoy a 4 1/2” stiletto?

Okay, my husband would kick me off the field…but….

A few of Tory’s other cuties – The Howard wedge hiking bootie (left) has a rugged yet polished attitude and can be worn with leggings or a feminine dress. The Trigg Tie-Up Hiking boot is mid-calf length and has a classic style with edge. This one would look cozy with leggings and a parka.

And now for the boot that is as elusive as the Elk….

This stunning showpiece by designer, Reed Krakoff, doesn’t really seem to be available. It’s not for sale on any of the normal shoe sites….or Reed’s itself. After a little digging, I found out why. I first came across this beauty in a recent issue of ELLE magazine. It caught my eye immediately, so I went in for a closer look. It’s not often you see “price upon request” next to items in magazines. The shoe is made with alligator and has a $5,500 price tag. Clearly this means I will be admiring these lovely boots from the comfort of this page. They are a work of art.
